Who We Are

The Washington Area Gleaning Network (WAGN) organizes food-rescue efforts from the agricultural sector throughout the year, either harvesting right from the fields or the trees, or salvaging foods from packing houses, then delivers it to the hungry.

Volunteers glean, or "re-harvest", crops that are considered not market worthy (size or shape don't meet standards), but are nutritious and good to eat. Instead of plowing the produce under for the next crop's planting, the farmer invites WAGN volunteers to glean the vegetables and fruits on his/her farm. WAGN then distributes this produce to food banks, church food pantries, low-income neighborhoods and public housing facilities for elderly people.

Taped message gives time and location of scheduled gleaning opportunities. Leave a message for map or directions and to register. Agency places field supervisor at rendez-vous point for further instructions. Volunteers harvest fruits and vegetables for approximately 2 hours; assist in loading the truck; enjoy a wonderful picnic and time of fellowship when the work is done.
