Event Description

The War at Home exhibit is a memorial to veterans who died from suicide. The War at Home Memorial is a traveling installation that raises awareness about veteran suicide. The 20 weathered steel plates each bear the outline and name of a military veteran who died from suicide. The memorial was created by Mission 22, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of veteran suicide, so named because on average, 22 veterans a day commit suicide. They hope through their organization and this exhibit not only to raise awareness, but increase aid in the form of transitional assistance and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, which often plagues our military personnel (PTSD, depression, etc.). Mission 22 worked with the City last year to bring their War at Home Exhibit to Larchmont Library and it can currently be viewed outside through November of this year. The exhibit consists of 20 large metal silhouette statues that are each modeled on service men and women who fell victim to suicide. More information, including print materials, can be found inside the library and all the staff are very knowledgeable about the exhibit The War at Home Memorial will be erected in a field next to the Larchmont Library – and near the Elizabeth River Trail – from fall 2017 through November 2018. It will then move around the country every 12 to 18 months, until it finds a permanent home.
